Roosevelt Hosts Family Reading Night The Roosevelt Elementary hosted a family reading night for their first grade students and their families. First graders have been learning about visualizing when reading. These students had a chance to show their family and friends how to create mental images inspired by the author’s words. Board of Education Schedules Public Hearing on Possible Special Election Members of the Board of Education will hold a public hearing on Friday, February 19th, at 2:30 p.m. to discuss whether or not to move forward with holding a special election to ask district residents to consider a change to the Instructional Support Levy. The public is invited to attend the meeting at the Educational Service Center, 12 Scott Street. The current Instructional Support Program is funded by local property taxes. The change would add an income surtax as a new source of revenue for instructional programs. If the Board proceeds with the special election, it would occur on Tuesday, April 6th.
Nelson Family Foundation Seeks Nominations for "Excellence in Teaching Awards" The H.H. "Red" and Ruth H. Nelson Family Foundation is now accepting nominations for the Excellence in Teaching Awards to be announced in May. A total of five educators from the Council Bluffs and Lewis Central Community School Districts will honored as part of this annual program and each will receive a $5,000 cash gift from the Foundation. Last year's honorees from the Council Bluffs Schools include Christy Bolt, Terry Hanzlik, Barbara Schmid and Joann Tews. Nominations are due February 26, 2010. Nominees must have a minimum of two years experience as a certified teacher or counselor to be considered.
District Mourns loss of Washington Elementary School Student The school community is saddened by the loss of Makala Prudhome, a 3rd grade student at Washington Elementary. She lost her life January 18th in a fire. Science @ Your Library Edison Elementary hosted a Science @ Your Library night on January 12th. Fifty-three K-2nd grade students and a few parents were in attendance. Students enjoyed three different science experiments and listened to books that were related to those experiments. Walnut Grove Breaks World Record On November 12th, 2009, Guinness World Records Day, 300 Walnut Grove Elementary students helped break a World Record. The goal this year was to set a new mark for “Most People Sport Stacking at Multiple Locations in One Day” (which is stacking cup as depicted above). The record-setting count being submitted to Guinness stands at 276,053 representing 1,252 schools and organizations from 24 different countries. All 50 states in the US were represented. College Access Program (CAP) Attention 8th graders! The College Access Program (CAP) is recruiting students for the 2010-2011 school year at ALHS and TJHS. CAP is a unique program for freshman students who are motivated to succeed in high school and pursue a college education. CAP students participate in a variety of activities throughout all four years of high school including after school College Prep Hour, fun Saturday Sessions twice per semester, specialized assistance in preparation for college, and enriching summer academies. The end result is not only being more prepared for college but also a $1000 scholarship from the Iowa West Foundation (as well as priority consideration for future scholarships)! Only 25 students will be selected to participate -- priority will be given to those students who demonstrate a financial need OR who will be first in their family to attend college. Applications are available in the Wilson and Kirn guidance counseling offices and are due by MARCH 26. Celebration of the Decades Event February 27, 2010 6:00pm Mid-America Center Click here for more information Tucker Center Students Receive Honors at HOSA Tucker Career and College Center would like to recognize all HOSA students who participated in the 2010 Regional Competition on January 27th. Tucker Center students competed against students from Missouri Valley, Malvern/Glenwood and Shenadoah Schools. The students spent the day at IWCC competing in 4 different health care events: Medical Terminology, Medical Spelling, Basic Concepts of Health Care, and CPR/First Aid. Tucker Center is proud to announce that Addie Kovacs of AL placed 1st in Basic Concepts, Stephanie Pimentel of TJ placed 4th in Basic Concepts, Michelle Baumbach of AL placed 5th in Basic Concepts and Shannon Nelson of Tri-Center placed 6th in Basic Concepts. Hanna Madson of TJ placed 1st in CPR/First Aid, Lacey Wright of AL placed 2nd in CPR/First Aid, and Alex Dixon of AL placed 5th in CPR/First Aid. Craig Larson of TJ placed 1st in Medical Spelling and Ashlie Burton of TJ placed 6th in Medical Spelling. Brittany Jarzynka of AL placed 2nd in Medical Terminology, Maddie Whiteaker of AL placed 3rd in Medical Terminology, and Lauren Slyter of AL placed 6th in Medical Terminology. The total number of students competing was 150. Parents of Pre-School Children Invited to Kindergarten Experience Thursday, Feb. 4th The entry into Kindergarten is an exciting time for a child and their parents. We are asking for your help in sharing information with your family members, friends, and neighbors who will have a child entering Kindergarten next year. The District is hosting an informational presentation for parents curious about what Kindergarten is like in the Council Bluffs Community Schools. This event will allow parents to meet Kindergarten teachers and learn what their child will experience in this important first year of school. It will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2010, from 6:30pm – 7:30pm at Bloomer Elementary School (210 South 7th Street). The next opportunity for all incoming Kindergarten students will be Kindergarten Ahead scheduled for April 29th, 2010, at all Elementary School locations. TJ Boys Bowling Takes First Place The Thomas Jefferson Boy’s Bowling team took 1st place in the Holiday Classic Bowling Tournament held in Council Bluffs, Iowa at Lightning Bowl. Thomas Jefferson finished 1st out of 9 Southwest Iowa teams; including: Abraham Lincoln, St. Albert, Lewis Central, Red Oak, Sioux City West, Sioux City North, Sioux City East and Lemars. The Thomas Jefferson girls placed 3rd out of 9 teams, falling to only Red Oak and Lemars.
