Gunn Preschoolers Celebrate 150th Anniversary

The Gunn preschool program created a 3-D model of Gunn for the 150th Anniversary Open House held Tuesday, November 17th.

TJ DECA Club Competes in Stock Market Challenge

The DECA team from Thomas Jefferson High School placed 2nd in the second annual Stock Market Challenge sponsored by the Boys & Girls Club.  

   

The team consisted of seniors Brandon Goraczkowski, Austin Hennings, Cody Stites, and Trevin Taylor. The game was a two month stock market simulation where the teams invested in stocks. Students purchased stocks from UNO students that acted as traders and the Scouler Ballroom was transformed into the New York Stock Exchange floor. The Yellow Jacket team was one of only two teams to accumulate over a million dollars. There were approximately 30 metro area teams in the competition that took place on November 12.

Kirn Students Launch 150 Balloons to Commemorate Anniversary

One hundred and fifty students at Kirn Middle School released 150 balloons in honor of the 150th anniversary of the Council Bluffs School District Tuesday Afternoon preceding Tuesday night's  district wide open house.  Attached to the balloons were e-mail addresses of the teachers so that whomever finds the balloons may send an email as a way to track how far the balloon traveled. For more information on the 150th Anniversary Celebration click the logo on the upper left hand side of the page.

Gunn PTO Fundraiser

Santa will be at Gunn Elementary on November 19, from 6:00pm until 8:30pm!  Stop by and visit or get your photo taken with him.  For more information please contact Michelle at 402-403-5105.

Members of the Thomas Jefferson Band performed on Veteran's Day at HyVee where veterans were honored with a free breakfast.

The Best Little

Theatre in Town

The Kirn Vocal Music Department presents:  The Best Little Theatre in Town on November 19 and 20, 7:30 p.m. at the Kirn Auditorium.

Admission will be $4.00 for adults, $2.00 for
students $3.00 for senior citizens. Immediate families will not be charged more than
$15.00 to attend.

Discover Africa

Edison School Kids

Edison Elementary library hosted a Discover Africa night as part of our year long Passport to Reading program for 3rd -5th grade students. The purpose of this year long program is to encourage our students to read multiculturally and look at the world from a new perspective. During this school year we will be "visiting" all of the other continents, we started in Africa since Ms. Rouse and Ms. Underwood traveled there this summer. All students had to first read a book set in an African country and then answer 6 question in their Passport to Read.

Classroom Grant Applications Now Being Accepted

The Community Education Foundation is now accepting applications for the 2010 Classroom Grants. All district staff members are eligible to apply. The Foundation and its partners have pledged $7,500 in funding for grants in the amounts of $250 and $500.  To apply, download the application at this link and apply on or before December 2, 2009. Application Form

Journalism Students Bring Home Honors

Abraham Lincoln journalism students placed well in the JEA/NSPA Fall National Convention that was held in Washington DC on November 12-15, 2009.

It was a record breaking convention with more than 6,347 students in attendance making it the largest convention on record. There were 2267 students competing in the write off contests with only 769 awards were given.

In addition to their impressive third place finished in DC, the AL journalism students also participated in the Midland Lutheran College 44th Annual Journalism Day held September 24, 2009. The following students brought home honors in five categories:

First Place Honors - Dan Hopper for Best Sports Story

Second Place Honors - Mallory Miller and Nicole Paulson for Best Yearbook Layout 

Third Place Honors - Matt Wettengel for Best News Story, Shanon Smith for Best Sports Story and Sarah Murray for Best Photo

AP SCHOLAR AWARDS

Eight students at AL High School have earned AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement on AP Exams. 
           
The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP) provides motivated and academically prepared students with the opportunity to take rigorous college-level courses while still in high school, and to earn college credit, advanced placement, or both for successful performance on the AP Exams. 
           
One AL student qualified for the AP Scholar with Distinction Award by earning an average grade of at least 3.5 on all AP Exams taken, and grades of 3 or higher on five or more of these exams.  This student is Wyatt Seals.

Seven students qualified for the AP Scholar Award by completing three or more AP Exams with grades of 3.0 or higher.  The AP Scholars are: Vincent Gutgsell, Samuel Heithoff, Angela Miller, Derek Munyon, Patrick Peters, Dallen Romriell, and Seth Shively.  

Of this year’s award recipients at AL High School all of these students are graduates of the class of 2009. 

Longfellow Teacher Named "Teacher of the Week"

Congratulations to Kevin Maxcy, kindergarten teacher at Longfellow, for being named Star 104.5 "Teacher of the Week". A very deserving Kevin was nominated by a student/parent in his classroom.
