"To Serve" by Michael Wilkins

to serve our country in a uniform

to wear that uniform with pride

to look upon the shoulder

to see the rank shining bright

to look at the medals glowing on the chest of a six foot man

staring with a smile

I wanted to be more

I wanted to make more than the average man

for life is filled with average

but greater is the true calling

true calling can be great

but it depends on what you put that greatness to

you must listen to the heart

the heart tells the truth

I want to be a soldier

to follow an honored path

to fight for my country to battle in this war

that consumes us all and more

to fight for what's worth fighting

to continue to endure

to hear the bombs a blowing and the cheers crying on

crying out from our people

crying out in love and joy

for the soldiers are here

we are here to fight for freedom

to withstand those against us

I want to be a soldier

to continue to build my strength

to push me to my limits

just to see what could be gained

I am now a fighting soldier

fighting for a cause

life is to short to not do more

so I pushed me to my limits

struggled part way

but now am glad i am not average

every single waking day
