Much of the information about the school comes from a class project
created by Miss Sally Becker, a former teacher at Carter Lake Elementary
School.
Our Past. . .
At one time, there seems to have been a one-room school house on the north
side of Locust Street near 5th Street. All eight grades were taught at
this building. In 1893, this school was moved across Locust Street to the
south side. Only the first four grades were taught in this building. After
completing the 4th grade, the pupils completed their elementary education at
Lake School in Omaha. Later, a frame building was moved to a site several
blocks north of Locust Street on 9th Street. The school had a two-teacher
system. The first six grades were taught in the school. In 1923, the
school grew steadily as new teachers were added and returned to an eight
grade plan. Older students received their secondary education under several
plans. At times they commuted to Council Bluffs, while other times
they attended Omaha high schools. Carter Lake became a part of the Council
Bluffs Community School District in 1966. In 1987, the school became
an elementary school. Junior-high and high school students began at
this time to travel to Council Bluffs to complete their education.
The present Carter Lake School includes a school site and building for
elementary students from pre-school through sixth grade. The site consists
of 10 acres and is located at 1105 Redick Blvd. The original building was
constructed in 1952 and included a gymnasium, administrative offices and
nine classrooms. Since that time, 35 permanent classrooms have been added.
