Washington has very talented and hard working staff members who are committed to helping children realize their potential. We are in the second year of implementing a new language arts program. We have seen some significant student gains in reading with the new guided reading program. We have ordered many additional books for children and we believe the current instructional program will make a difference. In addition, Washington now has two reading recovery teachers who will work with identified first graders to provide a reading boost at an early age.
With recent issues of violence in schools and communities, Washington School is dedicated to the safety of students and staff members. We have made several changes to the building, including a locked door policy. While classes are in session, all exterior doors except the main door are secured. Visitors to the building will be expected to stop at the office and pick up a visitor's badge.
Mission:
The mission
of Washington Elementary School is to develop the intellectual,
social, vocational, physical, creative and cultural capabilities
of students. We will identify and provide instruction to all
students within the least restrictive environment. The staff
strives to maintain a strong working relationship between parents,
community and school to further enhance the student's
life.
Washington School offers a
Pre K-6 instructional program with curriculum approved by the
Council Bluffs School Board. We are in the second year of
implementing a new language arts adoption, utilizing guided
reading strategies and groupings at all levels. Our 3- and
4-year-old preschool grant program and kindergarten classes offer
developmentally appropriate
activities aimed at preparing
students for the primary grades. Grades 1 and 2 focus on
developmental hands-on learning activities, guided reading, and
learning centers that provide a strong foundation for the
continued learning and independent study skills needed in grades
3-6. We have a large population of special needs students and we
try to provide them with as many inclusive experiences as
possible.
Physical Education, Music, and Art instructions work with students in grades 1-6. Washington School has talent pool pull-out enrichment classes, special education, speech, and music classes to meet the needs of our students. Students in grades 4-6 also have an opportunity to participate in instrumental music instruction.
